list no. 42 :: it's a fine line

Originally I was going to title this list, love + hate, but raising miss A in these P.C. times, we parrot, "hate is a strong word", and while I've said hate more than my fair share, I do agree that it's not a word to use in a cavalier sort of way and try to use it only when necessary, (see no. 4).

So. I thought instead, I'd do a like + dislike list, in the hopes to dispel a few anxiety-driven worries that always plague me leading up to a travel day.

  1. As you know, in my heart I'm a nomad and in reality, I'm very much a homebody and have anxieties around traveling.
  2. I love a good road trip, but I hate to fly.
  3. I don't let it ground me, but I do have major anxiety about it, especially when I leave my family and journey solo.
  4. I have ways to soothe medicate myself, and I've gotten better after traveling so much to Vancouver in 2011, but I'm still a stress-y mess.
  5. I arrive very early to the airport and even though the wait is endlessly brain-numbing, the waiting at home could drive me mad.
  6. I'm quite delicate when I travel physiologically and it's something that bugs me because I like to believe that I'm tough. But I accept it and I plan accordingly when I travel with a well-stocked kit.
  7. M has been known to rely on my little travel kit because it comes well-prepared.
  8. That travel kit and the restrictions that come with carry-ons is the main reason I check my luggage.
  9. I don't like checking my luggage because I worry about it arriving.
  10. My carry-on bag is always a struggle with style vs. practicality.
  11. This time I won't be a fool and I'm taking a backpack, while the cute bag(s) ride in my suitcase.
  12. Because I've shot in London, I'm leaving my digital and my 600 film cameras behind and it's one of my Spectra cameras and my 35mm OM-2 that  have made the cut.
  13. I love to read gossip magazines on the plane even though there's about three minutes of reading material.
  14. I like to pass them onto the flight staff to enjoy since they have a lot of down-time.
  15. I'm hoping to sleep, (at least part of the way), on my flights there and back. 10+ hours flight time is boring, and because of #9 rest is essential, so that's where #6 and mother's little helper come in handy.
Clearly, I'm a nutter. If you would, think good thoughts for my flight this evening, I'd be most appreciative, and I'll talk to you from across the pond.

  1. Wishing you safe and stress-free travels! And hope you have a blast in London!

As you know, I can totally relate to this list although unlike you, I have grounded myself for way too long. Definitely time to get over that hump! It's actually all the waiting that really gets to me...that and take off and landing. The actual flying part doesn't bother me as much.

    Cheers! xo
