this and that : the hump day edition

It's the first of August. Summer is more than half over and our much anticipated vacation to NYC is just weeks away. I'm planning to cram this month full of fun; a last hurrah of sorts before miss thing starts middle school, (gulp), and the days become noticeably shorter.

I'm looking forward to that vacation, anticipating the pulse of a city that forever holds my heart. Cameras are already decided upon, (obvi), and my motto is 'light.' And while I do plan to check my luggage, I don't plan to lug around my adored beast of a lens on my DSLR, or multiple film camera options as I did last year. Because she's light and very durable, I'm taking my fickle sx70. I do love that the Impossible Shop is in the city, making it easy to not be so concerned about having enough film. And its a favorite part of town, on the edge of Chinatown, Soho and lower Manhattan.

We don't have a lot of plans and we like it that way. Miss A will spend three days and nights in the Garden State, affording me and the mister some much needed time alone. There's a dinner plan with friends, maybe some karaoke with another, and a lot of walking around. I also hope there is a bit of drinking too. It's not often that we get the opportunity to enjoy a drink without one of us as designated driver. It's the freedom of NYC that I adore.  The ability to move and be whomever, wherever you want, 24/7 almost 365.

There are dark chocolate salt encrusted caramels to check out and dark chocolate tea, (in a delicious turquoise colored tin), to be purchased. I'd like to make it to Brooklyn and Miss A requested a Yankee game, so we'll see them play against the Red Sox. I'd really love to see something on Broadway, but there's only so much time and that three hour commitment, no matter how tempting, means 3 less hours spent walking around. So it might have to be a walk-through Times Square before the 8pm curtain call when people are bopping in every direction and your eyes are full of sparkling neon. (The no traffic streets with charming cafe chairs are sweet too.)

Once we return it's middle school registration, (there's that gulp again), and I'll begin to make plans for London in early October. There's also a birthday in there, (!!!), but I've come to an age where I'm vain enough to let my birthday slide under the radar. Trying to work on that, but as noted previously, old habits die hard.

What are you looking forward to for August?
