I'm not sure why I'm such a stickler for certain courtesies but I am. And that's not to say that I don't have some terrible habits because I do, and I'm certain that I annoy the shit out of people out there. Fair game.
That said, there are a few things that I see happening a lot and imho, think are social oversights.
- When walking on a city street side by side with a friend, do not continue to walk side by side when you have another person approaching from the opposite direction. Move in front of, in back of, or to the tight side of your friend and let the other person pass. Anything else is just rude.
- When you're standing in front of a cashier completing a transaction, do not continue to talk on your phone, ignoring the person who is serving you.
- Along those lines, when you're paying the person for your item, do not plop all of your money onto the counter, including coins, so that the person has to pick everything up. Instead, make it easier and place it into their hand.
- And if you're worried about touch, I can promise you that the money you're handing over is a lot dirtier than the small inch of the other person's skin you might touch in the exchange.
- When you're walking up to a door and there's a person on the other side who happens to be opening the door so they can walk in, don't assume that the door is being held for you and barge ahead.
- It's fabulous that your dog likes to go poop in the ivy/iceplant/dirt, my dog does too! When you leave your dog's waste in the ivy/iceplant/dirt, someone else and/or their dog will likely step in it, so even if you can't see it, pick up your dog shit!
Hell yeah. All of these.
